Everything on in Puerto Banús

On the Costa del Sol, New Year's Eve ranges from glamorous gala dinners in Marbella and Puerto Banús to busy bar-strip parties in Benalmádena, Fuengirola and Torremolinos, with free town-square celebrations in many towns. Every event we know of is below, by town.

Nochevieja is a big night in Spain, and the coast does it well. Many town halls put on a free celebration in the main square with music and the midnight chimes, hotels and restaurants hold gala dinners, and bars and beach clubs run parties into the early hours.

Don't forget the grapes: at midnight Spaniards eat twelve grapes, one on each chime of the clock, for luck in each month of the year (the uvas de la suerte). Little tins of peeled grapes are sold everywhere in the run-up. 1 January is a public holiday, so expect a quiet morning after.

Good to know

What is the twelve grapes tradition?

At midnight on New Year's Eve, Spaniards eat twelve grapes — one on each of the twelve chimes of the clock — to bring luck for each month of the coming year. Supermarkets sell ready-peeled grapes in tins for the occasion.

Are there free New Year's Eve celebrations on the Costa del Sol?

Many town halls organise a free public celebration in the main square with music and the midnight chimes. Where we know of them they're listed above; otherwise check the town hall's announcements nearer the date.

Is 1 January a public holiday in Spain?

Yes — New Year's Day is a national holiday, so banks, offices and most shops are closed. Restaurants and bars in the resorts usually open, often later than normal.

Do I need to book for New Year's Eve dinners and galas?

Yes — gala dinners and hotel parties are ticketed and the popular ones sell out well in advance. Book through the link on each event and confirm the price, dress code and timings with the venue.

How do I get my New Year's Eve event listed here?

List it free. Once it's checked it appears on this guide and on the town's What's On page, with a link to your tickets.
