Everything on in Cartagena

On the Costa Cálida, Cartagena leads with a Christmas craft market in the city centre and a food market with concerts on the port's seafront promenade. Every market we know of is on this page, grouped by town; the Mar Menor and Mazarrón towns usually announce theirs in late November.

Christmas markets on the Spanish coast are a little different from the northern-European kind. You'll find rows of wooden chalets, handmade gifts and decorations, but also nativity-scene (belén) figures, turrón, polvorones and other Christmas sweets, and very often a stage with free shows for the children. Most open with the town's lights switch-on in late November or early December and stay until the Three Kings on 5–6 January, though a few are weekend fairs or close before Christmas.

Two practical tips: many markets close in the middle of the day (a typical pattern is 11:00–14:00 and 17:00–21:00), and the evenings, under the lights, are when they're at their best. Entry is always free. Dates for the new season are usually announced by the town halls in November, so we've listed each market with its expected dates and update them as they're confirmed.

Good to know

When do the Christmas markets open on the Costa Cálida?

Most open with the town's lights switch-on, between the last week of November and the first week of December, and run until 5 or 6 January. A few are shorter — weekend fairs, or markets that close just before Christmas — so check the dates on each listing above.

What are the opening hours of the Christmas markets?

They vary by town. Many close in the middle of the day, with a typical pattern of 11:00–14:00 and 17:00–21:00 or 22:00; some stay open all day. The hours we know are on each listing above.

Are the Christmas markets free?

Yes — entry to all of them is free. Shows on the market stages are usually free too; rides and ice rinks, where there are any, normally charge.

What do Spanish Christmas markets sell?

Handmade crafts, jewellery and gifts, Christmas decorations and figures for the nativity scene (belén), and seasonal sweets such as turrón, polvorones and mantecados. The larger ones add food stalls, children's activities and a stage.

How do I get my Christmas market listed here?

List it free. Once it's checked it appears on this guide and on the town's What's On page.
